Colorful Furniture Trends - Part 2 of 6
By: Sue Rosenbaum, Staff Designer
Bright colors are being found in much
more than Adirondack chairs and children’s
furniture. Color is making its way into the
home by way of furnishings.
In the marketplace we are seeing color
influences of the Caribbean and of a European Country
Home from aqua and sky blues to sunny yellows and sunset
reds.
Basically, the time has come to expect the unexpected
in home furnishings.
The following are a few examples:
• A heavily carved Rococo mirror in a bright hot orange
• A Chinese Chippendale side table in a royal blue
• An 18th century coffee table in a soft bird’s egg blue
• An open side stackable bookcase in black with bright grass green on the interior
• A Chinese garden stool used as a side table in a metallic aqua
• The kitchen island in a barn red with chocolate rub through while the rest of the cabinets are a caramel colored cherry
• Kitchen appliances are now showing more color; reds, vintage 50s or 60s colors peachblow (pinky peach) and cerulean blue (deep sky blue)
• Washing machines are becoming fashionable by being offered in a deep ocean blue and a Tuscan chestnut
• A Bombé chest in a warm sunflower yellow.
Metallics are a new and fresh finish for furnishings. Not just the standard silver, bronze, gold and mirror, but metallic pinks, aquas and oranges.
That’s great, but how do I make it work for me? Start in a simple way ... the console table behind the sofa or the side tables in a bedroom. Certainly, the chairs at the breakfast area table are an easy place to try some color. A headboard in the guest room is also another easy place to test out color for most of us.
If purchasing a mirrored armoire is beyond your comfort zone, here is a suggestion for you. Have a mirror cut to fit the top of your foyer table, family room side tables or the sideboard in the dining room. You will be amazed how much more light will be reflected in the space by doing this small thing.
This is just a quick look at a few of the trends in furnishings. Give one of these, or a modification of these, a try in your own home. It will freshen up the feeling of your room and make you happy for a color influence.
